Hello Cascade families,
My name is Laura Guenther and I am honored to be your new principal. I have a special love for middle school and have over 15 years of middle school experience at five schools across three states. I grew up in Tukwila and lived in North Auburn when I worked in the Tahoma, Tacoma, and Renton school districts. I am excited to be returning to an area that I am familiar with and to lead the Cascade community. I look forward to getting to know each of you and I will strive to continue the great work Cascade is doing to ensure that every student finds academic achievement, friendship and positive new experiences as they navigate the middle school years. Parents and families are key to the success of students and I am eager to partner with you to ensure that your student has the best possible middle school experience. I wish everyone a safe and restful summer break and I will see you in September! Laura Guenther Principal [email protected] 8th Grade Reminders for Families:

Family Information Night:
May 11th 5:30-6:30pm See flyer for details A Message From the Health Room: Attention all families of students who are entering the 7th grade: Letters for students who are missing their Tdap Vaccination required for school attendance were mailed out from the Health Room at Cascade Middle School on May 2, 2022. The Tdap is a booster vaccine which continues to protect your child against the tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis diseases they may or may not have been immunized against as a young child. In Washington State, a Tdap vaccine is required for students attending school in 7th through 12th grades. All students entering 7th grade in the next school year, 2022-2023 are required to have the Tdap vaccine on file with the Washington State Immunization System (WAIIS) or have documentation of an exemption on file with the school prior to their first day of 7th grade, September 6, 2022. To meet the requirement the Tdap vaccine can be given on or after age 10. Documentation of the Tdap vaccine or an exemption must be turned in before your child can start 7th grade on 9/6/22. If we do not receive documentation by due date above, by law, we must send you a Notice of Exclusion for Immunization Noncompliance. This will explain that your child cannot attend school until you provide the required immunization documentation, RCW 28A.210.120. Valid documentation includes medical records showing vaccination or a completed Certificate of Exemption (COE) form. What do vaccines cost? In Washington, all children under age 19 can get free vaccines from their health care provider. Providers may charge an office visit fee and a fee to give the vaccine, called an administration fee. If you cannot pay the administration fee, you can ask your health care provider to waive the cost. Where do I get more information? Where do I get forms? For more information about immunization requirements, including links to the forms mentioned above, visit https://www.doh.wa.gov/SCCI. You can reach us at 253-931-4995 ext 7 for help or more information. Once again: In Washington state, children are required to get a Tdap vaccine at age 10 years of age or older to enter 7th grade. Sincerely, Jamie Allen, BA, MSN, RN Paula Hollerbach, BSN, RN Michelle Susner, Health Technician Jamie Allen, BA, MSN, RN Auburn School District Cascade Middle School School Nurse Schedule: Available Mon/Tues/Wed Cascade: (253) 931-4995 Nurse Phone: (360) 453-7642 Cascade Clubs 2021-2022 Interested in joining a club or activity? More info may be coming from the Department of Health soon. HEARING AND VISION SCREENING INFORMATION: Washington State law (WAC 246-760) requires schools to conduct auditory and visual screenings of children each year. Auburn SD students will be screening during the month of February and early March. Students in grades K, 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 are screened. All other students may be screened if they meet any of the following criteria:
Each school has a designated screening day. Screening is completed by the Auburn School District Screening Team, led by the school nurse. Vision screening for near and distance vision will be done using the SPOT (photo refractor), or PLUS Optic, or the LEA symbols, HOTV letter, or Sloan letter vision chart. Students who wear corrective lenses are screened with the lenses on. For kindergarten visual acuity of 20/40 or better in either eye is considered passing. For all other grades visual acuity of 20/32 or better in either eye is considered passing. Parents are informed by mail if their child does not pass the screening. Hearing screening is done using equipment providing tonal stimuli at 1000, 2000 and 4000 hertz (Hz) at hearing levels of 20 decibels (dB). Students who do not pass the initial hearing test are then scheduled to be re-screened at a minimum of 2 weeks for the initial screening. Parents/guardians are notified by mail if their child does not pass the second screening. A professional evaluation by a physician is recommended for students who do not pass their vision or hearing screenings. If you have any questions regarding the results of your child’s screening, please contact the school nurse. Cascade School Nurses: Jamie Allen, BA, MSN, RN (253) 931-4995 extension 7 [email protected] AND Paula Hollerbach, BSN, RN [email protected] If for some reason, you do not wish your child screened for either hearing or vision, please contact your school nurse as soon as possible via phone or email. The new version will allow families and students to have an improved experience when checking grades, homework, attendance and communicating with teachers. During the migration, Skyward Family/Student Access will not be available from February 15 at 4 p.m. through February 27. When the updated system goes live February 28, your current login information will access the new Skyward-Qmlativ Family Access. Click here for a brief overview of the Skyward-Qmlativ project. Mask Reminder The ASD’s goal is to keep students and staff as safe as possible so we can maximize in-person learning. We want to remind all students, families and sports fans about the indoor mask requirement. Masking is REQUIRED indoors at all times during our sporting events and performances, regardless of vaccination status. We want to continue to have events and we don’t want to have to limit attendance. The pandemic is not over and it is important everyone follow the mask requirement. We will have a supply of masks at sporting events to help with the mask expectation. Please do your part so we can continue to have spectators at our sporting events.
