1/14/2022 weeks of january 17 - January 28
Dear ASD Families:
Thank you for all you are doing to support your student during these challenging times. Since the beginning of the school year, our two goals have been to maximize in-person learning and minimize the spread of the virus. Achieving these goals has been challenging with the current virus transmission. Our strong desire is to remain in-person. We could not have been open the past two weeks without the incredible dedication of all ASD staff. Covering absences has been a tremendous challenge and we appreciate our staff pitching in to keep schools open. Teachers, principals, custodians, health staff, bus drivers, child nutrition staff, school support staff and central office staff have been working extremely hard to do everything we can to keep schools open. If one of these folks is a friend or neighbor, give them a word of thanks. We are closely monitoring the amount of healthy staff to support our schools. As a precaution, we are preparing for scenarios where we may have to temporarily convert to remote instruction at some grade levels. If it comes to this, we will communicate with impacted families. An additional tool to help keep schools open is revised Washington State Department of Health guidance. We are updating our website with the details, but want to provide an overview of the changes that reduce quarantine time and provide options for not having to quarantine.
If you want to read all of the updated K-12 guidance, it is available here. I also want to let you know about another testing option for students. The ASD has two Curative testing trailers on our property, one near Auburn Memorial Stadium and one at Rainier Middle School. The first 140 appointments per day are reserved for student and staff PCR testing from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. If your student needs a PCR test, your school can provide you with a special link to reserve a spot during this time. You must pre-register for an appointment with a special link. NO walk-ins are accepted. Please take time to relax and recharge over this upcoming weekend. Sincerely, Dr. Alan Spicciati Superintendent Mask Reminder The ASD’s goal is to keep students and staff as safe as possible so we can maximize in-person learning. We want to remind all students, families and sports fans about the indoor mask requirement. Masking is REQUIRED indoors at all times during our sporting events and performances, regardless of vaccination status. We want to continue to have events and we don’t want to have to limit attendance. The pandemic is not over and it is important everyone follow the mask requirement. We will have a supply of masks at sporting events to help with the mask expectation. Please do your part so we can continue to have spectators at our sporting events. Referrals open January 10 through February 18, 2022 for Highly Capable Programs: The Auburn School District is now accepting referrals for the 2022-2023 Highly Capable Program, a program that serves exceptionally intelligent, intellectually gifted students whose needs may not be easily met in the general education setting. Once a student is identified as highly capable, he/she is entitled to Highly Capable program services from the date of eligibility through graduation; annual testing is not required. Nominations close February 18, 2022. Screening considers nominees who are currently enrolled in grades Kindergarten through eleven. Selection for highly capable programs reflects state guidelines for identifying intellectually gifted students. If you feel your child should participate in further testing, but doesn’t meet screening criteria, you may nominate your child. Nomination forms are school counseling offices and are available online by selection the For Families menu, Highly Capable, and then Highly Capable Forms. 12/17/2021 weeks of december 18 - January 7Principal's Message As we prepare to enter a two-week period of rest, celebration and reflection, I am reminded of how thankful I am to be in the position I am and to have the relationships I get to have every day with the students, staff and community of Cascade Middle School. It was an eventful week leading up to break with lots of energy and celebration in the air. We love our kids and love that we get to partner with you to support your child on their growing-up journey. I hope for each of you that the next couple of weeks brings a time to re-connect with your family, enjoy a little holiday cheer and prepare to finish the school year strong. 12/3/2021 Weeks of December 6 - December 17
Tardy Sweeps:
As a reinforcement for students being to class on time, starting next week we will be doing tardy sweeps. Anyone late to class without a pass will be serving a lunch detention either that day or the next day. This will not go on their discipline record unless they skip the detention Upcoming Emergency Drill While nobody wants to contemplate a crisis in our schools, we know that sometimes the unexpected does happen. We can respond to a crisis to better protect ourselves and those around us through responsible planning and training and practicing; this is something we take seriously in Auburn School District and at Cascade. Safer classrooms and work environments can only happen if we take action. We encourage you to engage in discussions with your child about school and community safety in an effort to be prepared to act in the event of an emergency. In our continued efforts to maintain safety in our schools, we conduct emergency drills throughout the school year (Fire, Earthquake, Environmental, External, and Internal Threats). On December 15th, teachers will conduct classroom discussions focusing on options (Run, Hide, Fight) in the event of an active shooter emergency. The Run, Hide, Fight protocol is recommended by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of Justice, and various other safety organizations. We wanted to let you know about this drill in advance as we know this particular type of drill can be challenging for some students. We know that these types of drills are effective and do have an impact. As a presenter I heard discuss this type of drill years ago said, "the body can't go where the mind hasn't gone first" and that is the goal of our table-talk exercise on December 15th. Thank you for supporting our safety initiatives and having conversations with your children. Free Groceries before Winter Break: Please see flyer (click here) for details and location. SBA Testing - October 26th
Dear Cascade Families, This fall students in grades 4–8 will take the Smarter Balanced or Washington Access to Instruction and Measurement (WA-AIM) tests in math and English language arts. Students in grade 6 will also take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS) or the WA-AIM science test. Students had limited in-person time in the classroom and likely experienced fewer opportunities to learn last school year. Last spring’s Smarter Balanced and WCAS testing were postponed to fall as we prioritized critical in-person instruction time for the benefit of students, families, and district staff. The WA-AIM spring 2021 window was extended into fall to allow flexibility for teachers and students, based on student need. Smarter Balanced and WCAS tests were shortened this fall to ensure that students and teachers would have as much time as possible at the start of school year 2021–22 to establish relationships, routines, and activities. The results from the Smarter Balanced and WA-AIM math and/or English language arts tests provide a picture of whether students across the state are on track to be ready for career or college. Knowing your student’s achievement level (1 through 4) will provide an important piece of information as the school year progresses. Your student’s teacher will be able to provide more information about your student’s skills in ELA, math, and science. Our school will have access to the Smarter Balanced and WCAS test scores a few days after students complete the online tests. WA-AIM scores will be available in late January. Most students will take the tests online. Our school is scheduled to take the tests Tuesday, October 26th. For more information about the tests, visit: https://www.k12.wa.us/student-success/testing/state-testing-overview, and click on the name of the test. To try out an online Smarter Balanced practice test or WCAS training test, visit: https://wa.portal.cambiumast.com/. For more information about the WA-AIM tests, visit: https://www.k12.wa.us/student-success/testing/state-testing-overview/assessment-students-cognitive-disabilities-wa-aim. Please call or email Ms. Thomsen at [email protected] if you have questions about state testing. Thank you for continuing to work with us to make sure your student is successful. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to better support them. We want your student to leave us with a solid foundation of skills and a future full of opportunities. Sincerely, Meg McGroarty Healthy Youth Survey On October 29th students in 6th and 8th grade will be given the Healthy Youth Survey. It is an anonymous, voluntary survey given in Washington State to measure certain health risks among youths. Students may opt out by signing the Opt Out List in the main office. Please see the Frequently Asked Questions or go to askhys.net if you would like more information. Cascade Clubs 2021-2022 Interested in joining a club or activity? Principal's Message
It's hard to believe we are officially halfway through the first quarter of the school year, wow! It has been wonderful having students back on campus and seeing their faces every day brings such joy to our staff. We have not started without some bumps in the road and have recognized that social skills need some attention as some of our students are having difficulty dealing with conflict. Know that we will be rolling out lessons in the coming weeks to help students understand and navigate relationships, conflict and social media as each of those areas are having an impact on quite a few students. Lessons along with discussions will take place in various classes. Please ask your child about what they are learning and have follow-up conversations on healthy ways to form and maintain peer relationships, handle conflict and engage in healthy habits around social media. Thank you for partnering with us as we continue to navigate school during a pandemic and the many layers that brings with it. Reminders
Attention 8th Grade Parents On Wednesday, October 13, all 8th-grade students will be taking the PSAT at school. Students need to:
Say No to the Tik Tok “Challenge” Some of you may have heard of a recent list of monthly “challenges” on the social media app Tik Tok where individuals are encouraged to steal or damage property, commit assaults, and break a variety of school rules. Numerous incidents of vandalism have stemmed from this Tik Tok “challenge” in our school. Please talk with your student about the very real consequences of participating in this “challenge” and the negative effects of bending to peer pressure found on social media. The behaviors promoted in the “challenges” are illegal and will not be tolerated. Any theft or vandalism to school property, assault on other persons or other rule violations have consequences, including potential suspension, fines and even criminal charges. This is a good opportunity to discuss appropriate technology use and being socially responsible. Thank you for partnering with us to maintain a safe school environment. Healthy Youth Survey On October 29th students in 6th and 8th grade will be given the Healthy Youth Survey. See the flyer for details about clubs. Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) - October 26th Last spring, Washington state submitted a waiver request to the U.S. Department of Education and a portion of the waiver was approved, including accountability related to participation rates. In planning for the fall assessments, our goal has been to minimize the impact to scheduling and classroom instructional time while complying with state and federal requirements, which includes a requirement to conduct all testing in person. Grade Level and Content Areas for Testing The table below shows the fall 2021 testing picture across all grade levels. The top row of the table shows the student’s grade during the 2021-22 school year, and the columns underneath show the test(s) by subject the student would take in fall 2021. Principal's Thoughts:
What an amazing start to the school year! Our community is strong and that is showing through the positive start to our year - it has been great to see our students back on campus and the halls are buzzing, once again, with the excitement and noise of a new year! I hope this blog is a great source of information throughout the school year. We will publish this blog every other week so that you have the information you need but aren't inundated with too many emails; at least, that is the goal! It is an absolute thrill for me to be back as your principal and to get to welcome back Mr. Sites, Assistant Principal, Mr. Miller, Dean of Students and to welcome two new team-members: Mr. Trivino, Assistant Principal and Mr. Schlenker, Administrative Intern. As we have grown at the middle school level the district has supported us by providing an additional assistant principal to ensure that we are meeting the needs of our students, staff and community. Please take a few minutes to watch the introduction videos below to get to know our amazing staff a little better. Thank you for partnering with us to take care of your children and to help them learn everything they need to be prepared for high school and beyond. Meg McGroarty, Principal COVID Notifications As per district policy, we will be sending out a notification every time we have a COVID positive student at Cascade. Families of students who are considered a close contact, per CDC guidelines, will receive direct communication from the school with that information. From Janis Campbell-Aikens (Child Nutrition): It’s More Than a Meal Application! We will be providing meals to all students at no cost to families during the 2021-2022 school year; however, we encourage families who qualify for free or reduced-price meals to submit an application for meal benefits. Eligibility for free or reduced-price meals may qualify the students for additional benefits such as Pandemic EBT and reduced or waived fees for various school and community programs. In addition, some school programs are funded based on the number of eligible students. Completing an application takes about 10 minutes, and families should complete only one meal application that includes all their students. Applications are available online through Skyward Family Access, or a paper application can be submitted. Paper applications are translated into Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, and Marshallese. If other languages are needed, please contact the Child Nutrition Office. Thanks so much for helping us help our families!
